Where to stay by zone
The valley's beds are spread across three municipalities: Proaza, Teverga and Quirós, all less than 10 minutes by car from the greenway's access points.
The most practical way to choose a zone is to start from your plan: the greenway runs 22 km between Entrago (km 0) and Tuñón (km 22), and sleeping next to your starting point saves you the morning transfer, right when the car parks fill up before 10 am in July, August and on long weekends.
Teverga, the base for the bike plan
If your plan is the classic on wheels (Entrago-Buyera, 18 km of gentle descent with 200 m in your favour), sleep in Teverga.
- The rental point is in Entrago, at Polígono de Pradacón, and the ideal is to set off between 10 and 11 am: with your bed five minutes away you arrive unhurried, bikes still fresh.
- San Martín de Teverga also has the valley's biggest choice of restaurants and cider houses, so dinner is solved on foot.
- Km 0, next to the rental point
- Choose it if you are doing the classic bike plan and want dinner without the car
Proaza, the middle of the route
At km 14 and with the village 200 m from the greenway, Proaza is the most versatile zone: it works equally for a 5 km loop on foot or for splitting the route into two days.
- It is also the best base for the bear plan, because the Bear House is in the village itself and the Fernanchín enclosure is 5 km away, at km 19.
- Sleeping next door lets you be at the free viewpoint from 9 to 11 am, the cool window when the chance of seeing Molina the bear is around 70%.
- Km 14, village 200 m away
- Choose it if you are visiting the enclosure with kids or splitting the route into two days
Santo Adriano and Quirós, the two ends
The Tuñón area, in Santo Adriano (km 22), is the entrance closest to Oviedo: 40 km and 45 minutes on the A-63 and the AS-228, the logical choice if you arrive on a Friday night.
- As a bonus, it has the pre-Romanesque church of 891 AD a 300 m detour from the greenway.
- And the Quirós valley, with its 8-10 km branch between Caranga and Santa Marina, is the quiet corner: less traffic and the same greenway.
- Tuñón (km 22): if you come from Oviedo (45 min) or arrive late on a Friday
- Quirós (8-10 km branch): if you want calm or already know the main section
Options for groups
For a group, a whole holiday cottage is what works best in these valleys: your own kitchen, a shared living room and every bedroom under one roof, with nobody else's timetables. If no one wants to cook after pedalling 18 km, a rural hotel with a restaurant solves dinner and breakfast without starting the car.
Before booking, confirm two services that are common in the valley but not universal: a locked space for the bikes and pick-up at points along the route. With a group they are worth their weight in gold, because they let you finish in Buyera or Tuñón without organising shuttle cars back to Entrago.
If you are on rental bikes, two useful facts: from 20 people the quote is tailored, and the full-day rate (€28 for an adult bike, €50 for the e-bike) includes helmet, insurance, a map and the return transfer from Buyera.
You have how it works in bike rental and every rate in prices.
With families, the children's logistics weigh as much as location when choosing a house: a cot, a high chair or an enclosed meadow make all the difference.
The route gear is covered at the rental point, with a semi-tandem for ages 4-8, a two-seat trailer for ages 1-5 and a baby seat with a 5-point harness; we cover it in the greenway by bike with kids.
The firm advice: in July and August, book at least 3 weeks ahead, because the valley is small and the beds are few. For large groups widen that margin and deal directly with the establishment; the Principality's official accommodation search is at turismoasturias.es.
Campsites and motorhome areas
The valley's campsites are the cheapest option and the one closest to nature: pitches by the river and, in some cases, direct access to the greenway, with the route starting at your tent door.
For motorhomes there are dedicated overnight areas around the greenway; they are the reference for spending the night.
If you travel by motorhome, separate parking from sleeping.
The three free access car parks (Entrago with around 60 spaces, Tuñón with 40 and Proaza with 20) fill up before 10 am in high season, and a motorhome takes up as much room as two cars: either you get up very early, or you leave the vehicle at the overnight area and pedal over.
For the night, always use the designated areas, not the access car park.
The season matters more on a pitch than in a hotel. May-June and September are the sweet spot, with mild temperatures and fewer people on the greenway and at the campsite; in high summer start early and enjoy the fact that the more than 30 tunnels run 4-5 degrees cooler than outside.
In winter there are frosts and some of the valley's services are seasonal, so confirm openings before you go; we expand on it in the best time for the Ruta del Oso.
If your getaway is two days, our favourite combination is a night in Proaza or Teverga, greenway by bike on Saturday and enclosure or village on Sunday. You have it built step by step in the Ruta del Oso in a weekend.
Choose your zone by your km 0 (Teverga for the bike plan, Proaza for the enclosure, Tuñón if you come from Oviedo, Quirós for the calm), book 3 weeks ahead in July and August, and confirm bike storage and route pick-up before paying.
